What van should you buy?

Van conversions have been booming over the past few years, and for good reason. People want to live exciting and adventurous lives on their own terms and they want the vehicle to do it in. They dont want a cardboard, cookie-cutter RV. They want a robust, custom vehicle that will take them where they want to go and where they can lay their head at night. The next question is which van do you start with?

Choosing the best van for vanlife is a big decision. Below we will cover some basics about each van to get you started

Ford Transit

While most people think of Sprinters when we talk about van conversions, Ford Transits actually hold the largest market share of the commercial van market. With reasonable cost, loads of room, all-wheel drive options, many vanlifers love and are very loyal to the Transit.

Pros:

*Initial costs, as well as repair costs, are lower than a Sprinter

*Parts are reasonably priced as easier to come by

*Tallest interior headroom

*Factory all-wheel drive option (If you are willing to wait to get one)

Cons:

*All-wheel drive option only available on the gas model and doesn't include additional ground clearance

*At the time of this writing, it is extremely difficult to get your hands on any new Transit

Dodge ProMaster

The ProMaster, with its square, boxy interior and widest width, is becoming a favorite of conversion enthusiasts. It is the only front wheel drive van. Meaning, you may have more traction on flat surfaces, but less for outdoors adventurists going up off road hills.

Pros:

*Boxy shape and 5 inches more width gives more space and may allow you to sleep sideways

*Fuel efficient eco-diesel gas 20+ MPG

*Reasonable ownership and repairs cost

*At the time of this writing, new ProMasters are the easiest to find and purchase of the three van types

Cons:

*At its longest length, the ProMaster is still significantly shorter than both the Sprinter and the Transit

*No option for all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

As the Transit and the ProMaster take over more of the conversion market, many still consider the Sprinter to be the gold standard in commercial vans. For those looking for space, the Sprinter does offer by far the longest in their 170 EXT model. The Sprinter also comes in gas or diesel as well as a 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive option. The fault of the Sprinter lies with cost, both in initial as well as maintenance.

Pros:

*Resale value. The Sprinter has the highest resale value of the three vans. This is especially true with a diesel engine which is expected to run for much higher mileage

*Available in 4wd with raised ground clearance (if you are willing to wait)

Cons:

*Higher initial and ownership costs

*Mercedes-Benz does not have as many dealerships around the country as Ford and Ram do, if you do run into an issue. Also, there may be a wait to get parts for your vehicle.
